Brain Salad Surgery!

Yum.

Time is inching towards TUESDAY - the big day.
I will have surgery at Mass General Hospital in Boston to have my golf ball sized brain tumor removed.
A team of doctors will toil 12 hours to get rid of this puppy.
I just can't wait until it's OVER!!

I am being very Zen about it, honestly. All shall be well. I have alot of faith for a heathen. hee hee

My husband, Sujoy (Sue's Joy) will be posting comments and updates on my progress, so please check back here, ok? He promises to keep you well informed and will be speedy about it.

I cannot thank all of you enough for your love and support. It means the world to me.

I leave you with a picture of me in my favorite new outfit that I bought in Provincetown the other night!

Peace and love,
Suexxxxxxxxxx

Sue, you are beautiful. New outfits can do wonders for one's well-being!

I am glad the hospital has settled upon a date - the waiting and wondering must have been quite difficult.

I am looking forward to seeing that same smile soon.

Love to you and your family.

Sue-Friends,

Last night, over her Panang Duck Sue decided to name her tumor. She calls it Fred. She hopes to take back Fred in a glass jar once the surgery is done.

She is in good spirits. She is feeling confident and is not scared at all. She amazes me.

We are now at the hospital and the surgery is about to begin. The Surgeon's will provide regular updates that I will post.

Thanks for all the love and good wishes all of you have sent.

Hello Sue-Friends,

The surgery is being done in 3 phases.

Phase 1 is an incision into the skull. This part is done. Her vital signs are good.

Phase 2 has just begun and will last for 3-4 hours. In this phase they will cut through the mastoid bone and free up the portion that houses the tumor "Fred".

Phase 3 is the partial removal of Fred. The main reason to do a partial removal of a 4.5cm tumor is to ensure that the facial nerves do not get effected.

I am holding up OK. Was a little worried, but Susan's optimism and strength before she went in for Pre-Op has filled me with courage.

Thanks for the good vibes, prayers and the encouragement.

Love

Sujoy

Hello everyone,

Stage two is over and Fred is being cut to tiny little pieces. Sue is doing good.

After phase 3 ends the clean up begins and then we will get a full report. After the surgery, they will move her to the ICU for a couple of days to monitor her progress and then she will be on the general floor for maybe 4 days. After that she is ready to go home.

HOME! currently we are officially homeless so we will be staying with Cousin Anne who has graciously opened her home to us.

Anjoli and I will monitor Sue's progress for the next 10 days before making a decision. If she is recovering well we will leave her in the capable hands of Anne and fly to Taipei. Anjoli's school begins on Aug 17th and we are hoping that she will be able to start school in time.

Anjoli is currently in NY with her friend. She knows everything and I keep her updated on Sue's progress. She is being very strong. I am so proud of her.

Someone asked Anjoli if the removal of Fred is going to make her Mom less weird and she rolls her eyes and says that it will take the removal of some other part of the Brain to even come close.

I love my weird Sue and based on all the comments so do you guys.

Love you all

Sujoy

Friends,

Its done. The operation is complete and is a SUCCESS. The Dr. said that they were able to remove Fred completely. Also they are quite certain that they have not effected the facial nerves. They can see some movement there already.
That's bloody great news.

And yes I will echo the thought "Fred is dead, Long live Sue".

We are now waiting for her to wake up so that they can move her to the ICU. Once she is admitted to the ICU we will be able to go and visit with her.

The next 2 days are of course crucial. There are still a few major concerns-infections, spinal fluid flow etc. But everything right now looks very good.

Will post again tomorrow. Maybe ask Sue what she would like me to say.

Love you all

Dear Friends,

Sue is awake. She is talking and she is looking good. She asked me tell all of you "I love you, all".

The most amazing thing is that she can still can hear with her left ear. Before the surgery the Doc's had told us that the chances of left ear hearing was slim to nothing, but low and behold she can still hear.

She truly believes that all the love and good vibes from all our friends has made her strong and fearless.

On the walls of room we have pasted pictures of Virgin Mary, Anjoli, me, The Who, Rufus Wainwright, her lat mother(when she was a 6 years old) and her sister. She likes that.

I just went and got her a set of small speakers so that she can hear music while she is still in ICU. Have not had a chance to turn them on yet, but I will be doing so in the next few minutes. Will ask her what she would like to hear-any guesses? My money is on Rufus Wainwright.

Love you all. Never thought cyber friends could be so close and so loving and wonderful.

Hello Friends,

Day 2 & 2.5-

Some ups and downs. Beginning of day 2 they removed the spinal fluid drain tap (hole on right side of head). They had monitored it for 24 hrs and felt that there won't be a build up. They put 8 stitches around it.

All was going well till the end of the day; Sue felt some moisture in her nostrils and to be safe the Drs. did a test to see if there was still some spinal fluid leakage. The result was positive; so to reduce the pressure in her head due to spinal fluid buildup they did a lumbar tap (like spinal tap but the tap remains there for 3 days). Ouch-Very painful.

As a result of the lumbar tap, when Sue moves she gets acute mind numbing headaches. But Sue is a trooper and she continues to be positive.

Spoke to the Drs., and they are very happy with her progress. They have some minor concerns-
1)Spinal fluid build up (may require minor surgery if lumbar tap does not work after 72 hrs)
2)Eye lid movement

After speaking to the specialist, who came by this morning, both of us are quite relieved. In spite of these bumps on the road to recovery we feel that everything is going well.

Anjoli is coming back from NY tomorrow afternoon and both of us will be glad or see our baby. We missed her a lot.

Sue is now out of the ICU and on the general floor- excellent sign.

So please keep sending those positive thoughts, vibes, love and prayers Susan's way.

Speaking from experience I can tell you with a high amount of certainty that slow and steady wins the race!

There will be set backs but her amazing medical team will be able to counter most of them. At this point and time for Sue, Better living through chemistry is the perfect montra! Relying on things like pain medication, lots of sleep and rest and taking it slow is not a sign of weakness, it is a sign of a very smart person! You will see Sue improve each day, some days you will see only a small improvement other days you will see leaps and bounds, all are good!! I have my positive energy machine switched to overdrive!

Oh my! I take absolutely ZERO credit for this lovely production. Ronzi did it all ... put it together. As a matter of fact - since my mic is broken, he took my voice recording from the phone and added it in. Is he amazing or what? As are those who actually "created" the lovely music. It feels like I'm in the company of angels at times. Goosebumps.
;o)

Love & joy found in pain and trials. You're all amazing!

Love,

I forgot to tell you some good news! Leo passed the American Kennel Club Good Citizen test! Yes, he actually did it! He is now an official member of the AKC. Since he passed the test, he is now able to start "Therapy Dog" school. We are so excited. As soon as he finishes "Therapy" he will get a special vest and certification to be able to enter hospitals, retirment homes, visit emotionally disturbed children and other school environments, etc. So actually, if you are still in the hospital when we graduate, we could come and visit you, in the hospital. Leo would love to jump up on your bed and spoon with you! After all, you are like his favorite person in the world (except for Nana of course)! Anyway, we thought you would like the good news.

The greeting/song/get well wish from you singing friends was lovely.

Latest recipe: organic guzpacho! I have perfected my recipe. When you come to complete your student teaching I'll make ya a batch.

Man scoop: Still looking! Today heading up to the Acura Women's Tennis Championship's in Carlsbad at the La Costa Resort and Spa. I'll be wearing a conservative little outfit of solid color and a big sun hat. Might be a good place to wonder around and check out the wild life. Starting to think I may have to resort to trying to play golf! Yuck, everyone is telling me that is the place to search.

I went to Soak City with my friends Jane and Carla on Friday, along with two mini-vans of teenagers. Wow, what a lot of caios and fun. Wish you had been there.

This Friday I am treating myself to the Chris Botti concert at the Embardadero! I can harldy wait. I bought the best seat they had. Man, I love his trumpet!

That's it, over and out. Love ya bunches, think peace.

I second what Tink said, Delbut, Sue, Rance, Anjoli and her friends sang the song ~A Friend is a Friend~ in the background. Ronzi put it together as an audio card with our voice-overs. I was just glad to be able to send a message. Excellent job Ronzi!

Sue, glad to hear things are OK, even with the setback. Sujoy, keep us posted and take care of you!!

All -

I am flattered by your comments for the Audio E-Card, but the real person to thank is Sue. She recorded that beautiful song with Rance and Del and Anjoli. All I did was add some voices over it in a true expression of caring and love. I was floored when I read Sujoy and Sue's response to it.. that is stuff you can only hope for once in a lifetime.. the feeling of making a differnce in someones life...so beautiful..

One thing I am positive of is that Sue is totally aware of how much she is loved by all of us.

Sujoy is also a saint and a great person to talk to. We spoke today and I was just floored by what a great person he is.

You are all great people,. and I really mean that... from the bottom of my heart

Love Ronzi

Friends,

Hip Hip Hurrah!!! Sue is going to be discharged tomorrow. She is walking, talking and eating. I cannot tell you how happy we all are....

Sorry, did not post a comment for a long time but here is the best one of all. Sue is officially in recovery mode. Yes, this is going to be a long recovery, but I am sure Sue will make the best of it.

Sue is struggling with
-post-op headaches (may last for several weeks)
-fatigue from the smallest amount of exertion
-left eye blinking problem
-left side facial slackness
-and plain boredom

So, this what what we hope will happen in the next few weeks
-headaches will slowly fade away
-efforts to strengthen herself, will allow her to conquer her fatigue
-the doc's will implant a platinum weight inside her eyelid so that it will help her blink
-as time goes by her facial nerves will start working again. To start off a physiotherapist will stimulate her face with electrical shocks followed by facial exercises
-boredom...hmmmm...blogging? knitting?

I still cannot believe that it has been exactly two weeks since we found out about Fred(the tumor)and her marathon operation last Tuesday to get rid of him. This week seemed to last a life time. I am so glad the bloody week is over.

Thank you for all the outpouring of love, good wishes, good vibrations and the lovely flowers and e-song. Susan loved the e-song and plays for all the people who come to visit her.

Sue plans to do a Sinead; requires a surgeon to do it because of the sutures. Lest see what happens!!

Love you all

Sujoy

- Sue, currently uses a cane to walk. But her brain does not want her to walk for too long. She is exhausted after walking for 5 minutes.

I am so happy to hear that Sue has started down the road to recovery. It is a long road, yes but she will gain strength in every step she takes.

As for the hair, I say she should go for it. Hair today, gone tomorrow. I know this aspect first hand. I think I looked good bald and it is so maintenance free. I had a wig and I only wore it around people who might be uncomfortable hanging out with a bald chick! Sue will feel a certain amount of relief when she shaves her head!

Just take things one day at a time and remember you are healing Sue so you are expected to be a little weaker (physically) then normal. I dish out this advice to you so freely, I should have taken it myself ha ha ha!

Peace and love to you and your wonderful family!

Hey Mr. Sujoy!

Thanks for the update again. As for the boredom...this too shall pass. If possible, could you text me your mailing address? I'd like to send Sue a little something. P.S. Leo and I are really enjoying our new car! Man, is it fast or what?!

Ms. Sue,
You are doing so well! You are a super dooper trooper! Speaking of super dooper trooper, maybe a little Abba in the halls of the hospital would cheer you up?

I can only imagine the frustration you feel at all the fatigue. Remember to drink lots of water to help wash all that medicine out of your liver and body. I have heard it takes up to three months for the fatigue to leave. But, I am sure day to day you will feel better.
It seems strange to not talk with you. And I have a million thoughts I could type down here for you to read, but when I type the words, they just seem to loose their meanings, so I suppose the most important thing I could tell you is that I love you and am sending you all my love, prayers, and good thoughts to you for a sound and speedy recovery. The little chit-chat conversational stuff doesn't seem as important right now. And besides, I don't want the whole blog world out there to know my business.

I will tell you that I have been enjoying my summer. I started yoga also! Oh my goodness, talk about challenging! I thought Tae Kwon Do was hard, oh no, TKD was just a warm-up to get me ready for the challenge of Yoga! I love it! I am going to class each day right now. I am in love with my handsome dread-locked teacher. When you come back to SD to student teach, I definetly have to take you to a class with me.

Also, I met a guy (a medical researcher at UCSD)from India while downtown one evening after Comic-Con, who told me many interesting things about India. As the Hare Krishna danced by, I told him that I as planning to go to India next year with you and Sujoy. He told me about a place in the Himalayas that is a Yoga central. I am of course wondering if this is where Sujoy plans to take us. Have you talked to your in-laws?

Please give Anjoli a big hug from me and Leo.

It's so great that you will experience autumn in it's full glory! The smells and unnamed hues should be a real feast.

Enjoy. Lots of love, Chelice & Leo

I was being updated mainly by a certain Ms Fuller's blog, but when I came in here and heard the voice card made by Ronzi I was crying my heart out.
You are brave, beautiful and amazing!

All the best for a quick recovery.
As for me, after a harsh winter, I'll be on holiday for three weeks, but I will mentally send you warm sunshine from Greece...and when I come back I'll come here to say hi and I expect to see your writings..!

Count me in, I would love to help with the song..

Fred, you were taking up some mass, but you are gone at last, you're in my distant past.

Fred, dont you come back here again, cause you are not my friend, without you I will mend."

Wow! Welcome back Sue!
Excellent start to the Freddy's Dead tune.

Sue, I read you now have blinker bling. Platinum no less!

I have rap stuck in my head. Dread.

I said Freddy's dead,
yeah
Freddy's dead;
Kiss off, goodbye,
it was stuck in my head.

Freddy got ejected
and a bling got elected;
now face wants to smile as
I walk a fat long mile;
And no more in her head
lives this rap or ugly Fred,
because they both got ejected
and Suesjoy was protected.

....
by LOVE.
